Paper planes

While it was hot and burning, the LS2's pupils decided to create paper planes and analyse the information/ measure how far the plane would go depending on what type  (They had used).
Mrs Anderson set us a silent challenge, Mrs Anderson showed all the groups their task without speaking ( She played videos to make sure that the groups knew what their task was). Even those I joined this experiment while the paper plane craze was happening, I did get to create a paper plane but also use another plane to see the difference of the planes. All these photos in the collage represent a certain way or the process of the experiment.  In 1 photo, you can see a group of people working together to see which one each person and create their own paper plane ( Depending on what they chose). The others show, a person testing their plane and is about to make it fly! In the last two photos, it shown that they are throwing their airplane and testing how far it can go. Most of the these photos are from my group and the last one ( The photo on the bottom right) is used to show another angle and way people threw their paper plane from.  Mrs Anderson set us a silent challenge,

Sprint Comparison

Today I compared my spiriting features to an Athletes spiriting features, I learnt when spiriting you MUST have light feet, eye's focused and knees and arms bent.

My Magic Box

I will put into the box …
A Silver fern from a New Zealand tree’s
The bond of Friendship that will never end
The taste of snowflake mounting on my tongue
A beautiful flower that reminds me of the love in the people around me

I will put into the box …
A verse of the New Zealand Anthem that we sing as a family
Necklace of animals that I love as friends
Shine from the summery sun on a hot day
The story of the beautiful girl's and boys the light up my world

I will put into the box …
The New Zealand flag that I stand tall and proud by
A dress that I shall wed in from my Grandmother
A drawing by my best friend of Mickey mouse

My box is fashioned from Greenstone and Maori wood carving  and Steel, with some Tiki’s on the lid and Family photos in the corners. Its hinges are joint by the journeys I travel as I go over hills and under bridges as I go through roads that lead me home.
I shall share my good memories in my box only good shall ever enter my box for all my children and their children’s children for them to add in when I am gone.

Today we looked at a poem by Kit Wright called The Magic Box. Part of our learning this term has been to think about how we can use words to paint a picture in the mind of the reader when we write a description. I used things from my cultural thing that I like.

They talked about how much sleep we should have a night, about being hydrated though out the day, and about belonging. We talked about belonging to a team,  a family, a friendship group and a team. At the end of the assembly everyone ran up to take photos with the boys.

Hauora

Today in inquiry we got put into groups. We then got given a strip of paper and that to cut it up into four pieces, on each piece we wrote the one of the four names from the four wall. One was Taha Tinana, hen there was Taha Whanau, Taha Hinengaro and the last one was Taha Wairua.
Under each wall we wrote what it meant.
We then picked all four walls up and put them all together. We found that if one wall has fallen then all the other walls will fall. I learnt that you need to look after all four of your wall to be able to be happy

The Bengal tiger

The Bengal tiger (also known as the Royal Bengal tiger) is a subspecies of tiger, found in the Indian subcontinent. It is the national animal of Bangladesh and is considered, when fully grown, at nine feet, to be the second largest tiger in the world.
These big cats have a magnificent appearance. The coat color of this kind of jungle cats is reddish orange with narrow black/ gray and or brown stripes, generally in a vertical direction. The underside is white; a rare variant has a chalky white coat with darker stripes and icy blue eyes.
These carnivorous predators are dominant. The predators of the jungle cat are hunted by being stalked until  the tiger feels the opportunity to catch there prey off guard. Jungle tigers primarily hunt larger mammals including deer, wild boar, cattle and goats. To kill, the tiger raps its jaws around the prey's neck then snaps it. Then drags it away.
Bengal tigers are found in Bangladesh, India. They are known to live in both the grasslands and heated areas of the deserts where it’s wet and cool. These tigers are the most numerous species of tiger in Asia and is found in dense forests and mangrove swamps and jungles throughout Bangladesh, Bhutan and Nepal. Although the Bengal tiger's range today is much smaller than what it once was. Due to the size and power of the tiger, it has no natural predators in its native environment. Humans that hunt these cats and habitat loss are the only threats to the  tigers.
Today, due to habitat loss caused by deforestation, and hunting by human poachers, they are considered to be an endangered species. Despite being the most common of all the other tiger species. There are to be around 2,000 or less left in the wild.
Tigers are seated up high in the top-of-the-food-chain. When a tiger has eaten its prey, the abandoned prey becomes the food for a variety of mammals such as birds and reptiles.

Some cultures believe that powdered tiger bones have medicinal values. Unfortunately, tigers are highly in demand to supply this damaging market.

She was a woman back in the 1870s who, unlike the other women wore trousers and boots instead of skirts or dresses. She also went into the forest to cut down trees for a living. By her actions she Proved that women were as capable as men were.

Reading With Miss Kirkpatrick

This week in our reading group we have been discussing the way of "Bias" with Miss Kirkpatrick, Miss Kirkpatrick showed us this example.

(eg: There was a time, When more men than women were hired to play in symphonies. For some reason that was not known, the judges preferred male musicians. Today, however, most symphonies listen to the musician applicants from behind a screen so they can't see what they look like. But listen to the ability of the musician.)

By reading this most of us then knew the meaning of bias.

I now know that bias means "You only know one side"

SPag - Sub

The Subfamily The subfamily were on the subway, then they went to pick up the sub-man. Then they submerged while they were taking a submarine. They hopped out because it was sub-zero and one of them went subdue because they wanted to see what's under water. A while later the sub man talked about how he was subordinate

This is the chunky challenge. We had to find words in the dictionary that starts with sub. And put it into these grey and yellow boxes. Then we had to choose eight of them and make a paragraph of it.

Writing a Story

The Unnamed

“We can send her to get the...” whispered the first guy.
“Shhhhhhhh what if they’re in here, c’mon think before you speak!” the second guy pointed out.
“MMMMMMMMMMGGGGHHHHHMHMMMGMMHHHH” Lucy tried to scream. She tried to untie the ropes that were around her ankles. She couldn’t believe how many knots were between her and the way out. She suddenly heard the two men which made her stay as silent as she could so she wouldn’t draw attention to herself. She felt the rope loosening as she tried to shuffle off the hay without anyone noticing.

She hit the ground. Lucy felt scared because the ropes were still holding her prisoner. It had become a matter of life or death in Lucy’s head. Her heart was racing. Lucy just wanted to get out! She then heard the two men muttering about something. She eavesdropped:  “You can’t just throw a (you know what) when you have a person tied up out back, you idiot!” The first guy said
“Shut up Kyle! You don’t know anything,” The second guy said.  “Kyle? hmmm” Lucy sat for a bit thinking, she was wondering if it was all a joke. If this was just a prank. She finally untied herself. She tiptoed over to the big door. She pulled it open, hoping no one would hear.

“Hello?” Lucy was worried. “Anyone here?” She asked as if someone was going to reply “Yes, just in the kitchen want a sandwich?” She laughed in her head.
“Oi who’s there? I know you can hear me!” said a loud voice. “Get out of here!” He yelled as loud as he could.
She ran through the door.

With a sigh of relief she opened her eyes to find cows in front of her. “Hi Mr Cow I’m just going to walk down here... please don’t hurt me...” Lucy begged, trying carefully to avoid eye contact.
“Oi who are you!? What are you doing here?! This my land! growled this Kyle.
“I was just admiring your cows... “ replied Lucy. He ordered Lucy to leave. She got to the road. BANG! Shots rang out behind her. Lucy began to run...

Using fake text

My role was one of the bus strikers and i was texting my boss and my friend. I was explaining to them my bias (my point of view). Paige's role was the public and she was texting a work mate and one of the bus strikers and she was doing the same thing but her bias. I was important to look at both sides of the story (provocation) to make an informed choice.

Auckland Bus Strike

Today, Micaiah and I started working on a DLO about the Auckland Bus Strikes. We used our skim and scan skill to find information and to add it to our DLO. Micaiah and I also added a Point Of View for the two groups involved in this Bus Strike. This work helped us the to find various sources and it added it to a our DLO but also making sure that it's in our own words.

This is my google drawing showing the two Pie chrats I made, It has the votes that PBS made on whether we should or shouldn't change our flag. The final voting results shows that PBS went with the Nation and has decided to keep the current flag. I am happy with what our Nation voted for because I also wanted to keep the current flag. The only down side is that 27 million dollars was wasted when it could have been used for something more important such as schools and educations. Also, it would have cost even more to change everything with the current flag and it would have disrespected the people who died under it.

Yes or No

Making an imformed choice

Today we had our second vote for the New Zealand flag.  We got into our groups and wrote down reasons for Yes (We should) and reasons for No (We shouldn't). We then came together and shared what we had written down, Mrs Anderson put what we shared with the class on the whiteboard. She told us that we were now going to vote on a peace of paper. She gave us a piece of paper with a picture of the new flag and the old flag. We then had to tick the boxes under the flag we wanted we all did it at the same time. We then hide our papers as we put them into the envelope. After we had finished all of the voting Mrs Anderson told us that we had just made a choice based on information.

Baking Soda and Vinegar

EXPERIMENT
My experiment SCIENCE was about:
Baking Soda and Vinegar
The question I asked:

  • What we smelt?
  • What it felt like?
  • What we saw?
  • What we heard?
This is what I used:

We used baking soda and vinegar
This is what I did:

First we put half a teaspoon of baking soda in a shot glass and half a cup of vinegar into the baking soda. when we poured malt vinegar into the baking soda it was fizzing and it was bubbly.
This is what I learned:

I learned had it totally depends on how much you add and how and how much you didn’t  add this because we used all different types of vinegars and some made a huge difference and some didn’t
This happened when I changed the variables:

when we changed the malt vinegar into white vinegar the white vinegar made the fizz pop more and it was bigger than it was when we put the malt vinegar in and it smelt really bad.
Picture of what I did:
